ElFys is Selected for European Defence Fund 2024: Accelerating Photonics Leadership in Defence

The EDF’s rigorous selection process highlights only the most promising technologies and teams in Europe. From a highly competitive field, ElFys has secured its place alongside top-tier research and industry leaders from Spain, Germany, and Czechia. The Silfrared project, coordinated by Universidad Complutense de Madrid, will harness ElFys’ unique black silicon expertise to create low-cost, high-resolution, and fast-response detectors for night vision and surveillance-an area where performance is mission-critical. ElFys’ technology is at the heart of this leap, enabling the EU to gain a strategic edge in surveillance and reconnaissance.

Silfrared aims to develop a new technology for infrared photodetectors using supersaturated silicon and black silicon. The goal is to create low-cost, high-resolution, and fast-response detectors for night vision applications, providing the EU with a strategic advantage in surveillance and reconnaissance operations. This technology combines uncooled operation, high resolution, and fast response time with improved system size, weight, power consumption and cost requirements than other solutions.

About EuropeanDefence Fund 2024

The EDF is the European Commission's primary instrument for supporting collaborative defence R&D, complementing Member States’ efforts by fostering cooperation among companies and research institutions across the EU and Norway. The fund ensures European industry remains at the forefront of cutting-edge defence technology and innovation.

The European Defence Fund’s priorities for 2024 are closely aligned with the strategic objectives outlined in the White Paper on European Defence Readiness 2030, which emphasizes the need for a surge in defence investment to address the pressing security challenges facing the continent. With a focus on critical technologies, such as AI, quantum, and air defence, the Fund will support projects that have the potential to drive transformative change in the European defence sector.

The Commission will invest close to €1 billion in 62 new EDF projects, bringing total EU funding for collaborative defence R&D to over €4 billion since 2021. The selected proposals respond to the funding priorities of the 2024 EDF work programme, addressing 32 topics structured along four thematic calls for proposals, plus bottom-up calls focused on SMEs.

About ElFys, Inc.

ElFys, Inc. was founded in 2017 and is located in Espoo, Finland. The company is based on long-term research work on photodetector technologies at Aalto University. Our core team consists of former senior researchers, engineering leaders and business professionals. The company utilizes the state-of-the-art processing facilities at Micronova Nanofabrication Center in Espoo, Finland: 2600 square meters of CMOS compatible facilities suitable for both R&D and semi-mass production. For high-volume mass production, ElFys has partnered with an external, European foundry.

ElFys provides light sensors with sensitivity better than anything seen before, literally catching every ray of light. The technology greatly improves any light sensing application ranging from health monitoring to analytical instrumentation, space and defence. The superior performance of ElFys photodetectors is based on an inventive combination of modern MEMS nanotechnology and atomic layer deposition. The core technologies are patented and in the possession of the company. www.elfys.fi
